Naked

Dear Erykah Badu,

I appreciate you taking the liberating move of ridding yourself of all the manmade layers in your video “Window Seat” until you were able to move to the end clothed in only what God had given you. It was not until you were naked that you were made whole and complete yet this was the same moment society assassinated what they could not understand.

It is just as you stated in Window Seat:

They play it safe.
Are quick to assassinate what they do not understand.
They move in packs, ingesting more and more fear with every act of hate on one another.
They feel most comfortable in groups, less guilt to swallow.

They are us.

This is what we have become.
Afraid to respect an individual.
A single person within a circumstance can move one to change,
to love herself,
to evolve.

Even as we do a colloquial strip down of removing all the layers we’ve gathered over the years while doing our best to fit into the groups, to erase the guilt, and ingesting the fear we continue to fear rejection. There is an understanding that the less coverage you have the more vulnerable you have made yourself and an idea that this exposure will cause you to wind up hurt or dead in a gutter, just as so many heroes before us who have dared to strip down to expose their unique individual, removing themselves from the guilt and exposing the change within.

I, however, am inspired by “Window Seat” to be the single person within a circumstance that can move one to change, to love herself, to evolve.

Love Always,
Sunny
