Happy Birthday Michael Jackson

Dear Michael Jackson,

Your absence has been greatly missed in the time you’ve been gone. It’s been amazing to see the way your fans have continued their love and loyalty to you even as it’s been the second birthday we’ve had without you. Spike Lee has organized his second annual event in Propsect Park this weekend for your birthday and it will be a packed event with troves of people surrounded in your music, keeping you very much alive in our hearts.

Yesterday at a BBQ In Harlem I had an opportunity to have a conversation with some older ladies who had seen Michael Jackson in concert with his brothers at the Apollo when they were the Jackson Five. When Michael Jackson was a cute little eight-year old boy with his giant afro wooing the world over as he boldly crooned about his baby giving him one more chance to show her that he loves her. As he begged to be let back into her heart.  Across the stage he slid with his brothers in tow at clubs all along the chitlin’ circuit, often opening up for stripteases and other adult acts.  In this mesmerizing conversation I was taken back to Harlem in the 70’s and imagining a Michael Jackson that was just starting out.

From there these ladies went on to tell me about Michael departing from Motown and the extreme impact it had on the Harlem community and their relationship with Michael Jackson’s career. Motown had for so long been considered the Black Record Company and this move to Epic made the Black community as they were quite aware of the potential for impact Michael Jackson would have on the music industry and didn’t want him to get lost in a big Record Label like Epic.  They needn’t be concerned for long as he quickly teamed up with Quincy Jones and produced his first solo album Off the Wall an album that reached number 3 on the Billboard 200.  Jackson had always been a dancer as this was the era of music at the time and during his first solo album he began to construct routines that were far more complex and complicated and people began to fall in love with the many facets of Michael Jackson.

Back to Motown Michael Jackson went. This time with a budding career as a solo artist and not as part of the dynamic Jackson 5. Thriller brought Michael Jackson to the forefront of the music industry in a powerful way with  Time describing Jackson’s influence at that point as “Star of records, radio, rock video. A one-man rescue team for the music business. A songwriter who sets the beat for a decade. A dancer with the fanciest feet on the street. A singer who cuts across all boundaries of taste and style and color too”.

The New York Times wrote that, “in the world of pop music, there is Michael Jackson and there is everybody else”.

It was around this time in 1983 that Jackson reunited with his brothers for the Motown reunion special and debuted his famous moonwalk for oggling eyes across the nation. If they hadn’t found love for Michael Jackson before then they had found all they needed to now and forever fall in love.  The nation had found their King of Pop.

As we know Michael Jackson’s career continued to explode, experiencing the peaks and valleys of any career, of course magnified by the experience of having a personal life that everyone in the world had access to. Michael Jackson could turn crowds of excited fans into overwhelmed, sobbing people with his performances. He was on top and he also hit a rock bottom that would be impossible to imagine.

Fifty short years he graced the planet and for 42 of those years he was a world-class performer.  There are few others like him and it’s so difficult to imagine that his life was ended when he still had so much the world wanted from him. So today, Michael Jackson, on the day you would be turning 52 we salute you, thank you, love you and hold you dearly in our hearts as a powerful influencer of the music industry as we’ve known it. Michael we Love you!

Love Always,

Sunny
